ETERNAL LIFE
What happens after we die? Most religions and philosophies provide some notion of this, but we are confounded by the mystery of it all. Today’s readings give us a glimpse through the faith of martyrs and in the words of Jesus. In the Old Testament reading, the Maccabee brothers assert with total confidence that the God who gave them life would also raise them to eternal life. This was not universally accepted in ancient Israel. The Sadducees, who denied any resurrection of the dead, try to trap Jesus with a hypothetical riddle. Jesus, known for turning such things around, dismisses their unbelief, noting that even Moses knew that all are alive in God. Saint Paul tells the Thessalonians that we live in everlasting encouragement and hope, and Psalm 17 echoes this with words of faith that we will see God’s face, waking in God’s loving presence.

¿Qué pasa después de la muerte? La mayoría de las religiones y filosofías ofrecen algunas ideas al respecto, pero estamos confundidos por todo ese misterio. Las lecturas de hoy nos ofrecen un vistazo a través de la fe de los mártires y de las palabras de Jesús. En las lecturas del Antiguo Testamento los hermanos macabeos afirman con una confianza total que el Dios que les dio la vida también los resucitara a la vida eterna; y esto no era aceptado generalmente en el antiguo Israel. Los saduceos, que negaban toda resurrección de los muertos, intentaron poner una trampa a Jesús con un acertijo hipotético. Jesús quien era conocido por darle vuelta a las cosas, descarta su incredulidad, señalando que incluso Moisés sabía que todos están vivos en Dios. San Pablo dice a los tesalonicenses que vivimos en la esperanza y ánimo eternos, y el salmo 17 refleja esto con palabras de fe en que veremos el rostro de Dios, despertando en su presencia amorosa.
