Feast of the Holy Family • Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God • New Year Message
As we stand at the doorway of a New Year, the Church invites us to pause and look not first at our calendars or resolutions, but at a family—the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In their simple home in Nazareth, God chose to dwell. Faith was lived quietly, love was practiced daily, and God’s plan unfolded through ordinary family life (Luke 2:51-52).
Saint John Paul II, in Familiaris Consortio, called the family “the domestic Church,” the first place where faith is learned, love is practiced, and God is encountered. Before we belong to parishes or institutions, we belong to families. What happens around the family table shapes what happens at the altar (Deute 6:6-7).
The Holy Family was not perfect or free from hardship. They faced uncertainty, migration, fear, and sacrifice. Yet their home was centered on God. Joseph trusted even when he did not fully understand. Mary pondered God’s word in her heart. Jesus grew “in wisdom, age, and grace” within the safety of family love (Luke 2:52). Their example reminds us that a Christ-centered family is not one without challenges, but one where God is welcomed into every moment—joyful and difficult alike.
On January 1st, we honor Mary, Mother of God, and place the New Year under her care. Mary teaches us how to begin again—with trust, humility, and hope. When families entrust themselves to her, they discover strength in weakness and peace amid uncertainty.
As we begin this New Year, let us renew our commitment to building homes where:
– Prayer is natural and frequent (1 Thessa 5:16-18)
– Forgiveness comes more easily than blame (Col 3:13)
– Faith is lived, not just spoken (James 2:17)
– Love is patient, faithful, and generous (1 Cor 13:4-7)
Strong families build strong parishes. Strong parishes build strong communities. And a world longing for peace begins with Christ-centered homes. May this New Year be a year of renewed love in our families. May the Holy Family of Nazareth inspire us. May Mary, Mother of God, watch over every home. And may Christ, the Prince of Peace, reign in our hearts, our families, and our parish.
Happy New Year! May God bless our families and keep us in His care.
