Hope on the Mountain of the Transfiguration
Every year on the Second Sunday of Lent, the Church proclaims the Gospel of the Transfiguration (cf. Gospel of Matthew 17:1–9). Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, and there He is transfigured before them. His face shines like the sun, and His clothes become dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear beside Him, showing that the Law and the Prophets are fulfilled in Christ.
This moment is closely connected to what is about to happen. Jesus has already spoken about His coming suffering and death. The Cross is nearby. Before leading His disciples to Calvary, He allows them to see His glory. The Father’s voice is heard: “This is my beloved Son… listen to Him.” These words invite the disciples—and us—to trust Jesus, even when the road is difficult.
The Transfiguration reveals who Jesus truly is the Son of God, full of divine glory. At the same time, it shows us what God desires for us. The light that shines from Christ is the light He wants to share with His faithful ones. Lent, then, is not only about sacrifice; it is about transformation. Through prayer, fasting, and works of charity, the Lord prepares our hearts so that His grace may shine within us.
This Gospel also speaks to our daily lives. We all experience struggles, suffering, and uncertainty. The vision on the mountain reminds us that suffering united to Christ is not the end of the story. If we walk with Him in faith, we will also share in His victory.
On this Second Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to climb the mountain with Jesus, to listen to Him more attentively, and to trust that beyond every cross there is glory. Lent leads us through the Cross, but it always points us toward the light of Easter.
Esperanza en la Montaña de la Transfiguración
Cada año, en el segundo domingo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia proclama el Evangelio de la Transfiguración (cf. Evangelio de Mateo 17:1–9). Jesús lleva a Pedro, Santiago y Juan a una montaña alta, y allí es transfigurado ante ellos. Su rostro brilla como el sol, y su ropa se vuelve deslumbrantemente blanca. Moisés y Elías aparecen a su lado, mostrando que la ley y los profetas se cumplen en Cristo.
Este momento está estrechamente ligado a lo que está a punto de suceder. Jesús ya ha hablado de su venida, sufrimiento y muerte. La Cruz está cerca. Antes de guiar a sus discípulos hacia el Calvario, les permite ver su gloria. Se oye la voz del Padre: “Este es mi amado Hijo… escúchale.” Estas palabras invitan a los discípulos y a nosotros a confiar en Jesús, incluso cuando el camino es difícil.
La Transfiguración revela quién es realmente Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, lleno de gloria divina. Al mismo tiem po, nos muestra lo que Dios desea para nosotros. La luz que brilla de Cristo es la luz que Él quiere compartir con sus fieles, la Cuaresma, entonces, no es solo sacrificio; Se trata de transformación através de la oración, el ayuno y las obras de caridad, el Señor prepara nuestros corazones para que Su gracia brille en nosotros. Este Evangelio también habla de nuestra vida diaria. Todos experimentamos luchas, sufrimiento e incertidumbre. La visión en la montaña nos recuerda que sufrir unido a Cristo no es el final de la historia. Si caminamos con Él en fe, también compartiremos Su victoria.
En este segundo domingo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia nos invita a subir la montaña con Jesús, a escucharle con más atención y a confiar en que más allá de toda cruz hay gloria. La Cuaresma nos guía a través de la Cruz, pero siempre nos señala hacia la luz de la Pascua.
