From Our Pastor – Pentecost: The Fire That Birthed The Church

Pentecost is one of the most powerful feasts in our Catholic faith — the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and Mary, setting the Church ablaze with divine fire. But Pentecost didn’t begin in the Upper Room. Its roots go all the way back to the Old Testament.
+ Pentecost in the Old Testament
Before Pentecost was a Christian feast, it was a Jewish celebration called Shavuot — the Feast of Weeks — celebrated 50 days after Passover. It marked the first fruits of the harvest and later became the memorial of God giving the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai.
On that day, the mountain shook with fire, thunder, and wind, and the people entered into a covenant with God.
✝️ The Fulfillment in the New Testament
At the Last Supper, Jesus promised: “The Holy Spirit… will teach you everything.” (John
14:26) And before His Ascension, He told the Apostles: “You will receive power… and you will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
That promise was fulfilled 50 days after Easter, when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and Mary in the Upper Room with tongues of fire and the sound of a mighty wind. They were transformed from fearful men into bold preachers of the Gospel. This is the birth of the Church.
The Birth of the Church
As the Old Covenant was sealed with the giving of the Law, the New Covenant is sealed with the giving of the Spirit. God now writes His law not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts. Pentecost marks the beginning of sacramental life, mission, preaching, and the growth of the Christian community in the world.
**Pentecost Today
The Holy Spirit did not only descend once. He continues to dwell in the Church — in every Baptism, every Confirmation, every Eucharist, every moment of prayer and witness.
As Pope Francis reminded us:
“Let us ask ourselves: are we open to the Holy Spirit? Do we let ourselves be guided by Him?”
Today, let us renew our openness to the Spirit. May the wind and fire of Pentecost rekindle in us the courage to live and share our faith boldly in a world that so desperately needs the light of Christ.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created,
and You shall renew the face of the earth.
